A Message to the Neurodiagnostic Community from the ASET Executive Committee

    Dear ASET Colleagues and Friends:

Some of you are facing full patient capacity and caring for very sick patients while fearful for your own health and the well-being of your loved ones. Others are facing empty clinics and hospitals, furloughs, reduced hours or canceled contracts, and worry about the financial impact it will bring to your home and family. Many managers and departments are struggling with the emotional toll of furloughing staff and developing strategies to reopen facilities, prioritize patients and schedule staff to cover these needs. Whatever your role in the Neurodiagnostic Technology profession, please know that our thoughts are with you as our cities, clinics and hospitals manage through the challenges of COVID-19 and will continue to in the weeks and months ahead of us.

In the face of uncertainty, we at ASET want to provide support and resources to help you navigate these uncharted waters. We have a list of resources on the ASET website that we hope you will find helpful:

    • A free webinar on the implications of COVID-19 on clinical neurophysiology departments.
    • An Open Access article by Haines & Caccamo et al. that shares the story of a Neurodiagnostic team facing their first EEG on a COVID positive patient and the procedure modifications they took to reduce exposure time.
    • A management section (scroll down) which lists strategies managing requests for NDT testing, for optimizing PPE supplies and HR solutions for managing compliance, shared work programs and the CARES Act for you and your employees.
    • Especially for managers, a free eight-part learning series on leadership through COVID-19 that provides useful tools and ideas for cultivating personal resilience and leading in times of crisis.
    • A new ASET Forum has been created, “Support during COVID-19”, as a venue to seek and to provide resources for positive mental health. It serves to promote networking, unity, and a place to share strategies during challenges we face together as a profession.
    • And this JAMA article will provide you helpful information to understand and address sources of anxiety among all healthcare professionals during this time.
As restrictions relax, clinics and facilities reopen and we begin our journey toward normalcy, we must all do our part to unite around a shared commitment for a healthy and safer world for our families, our patients and ourselves. We at ASET, pledge to continue to update our resources to keep them relevant and timely and will work to identify other ways in which we can support you, the Neurodiagnostic community, through this precarious time.

    Sincerely,
ASET Executive Committee: Connie Kubiak, Adam Kornegay, Emily Kale and Kevin Helm

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: We would also like to acknowledge and express our sincerest gratitude for the neurology and epilepsy resources that have been shared with us through the COVID-19 Resource Steering Group, comprised of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), American Epilepsy Society (AES), American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS), American Academy of Pediatrics/Children and Youth with Epilepsy Center, the Child Neurology Foundation (CNF), Child Neurology Society (CNS), the Epilepsy Foundation (EF), International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), and the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC).
